ABOUT US

OUR HISTORY
The Canon City Church of Christ began as a ‘house church’ in 1937. Descendants of those founding members attend today. In 1940 that group planned to construct a building where the congregation would meet. They purchased property at the southeast corner of Fifth Street and Harrison Avenue. Construction was performed by the men of the church. The church met at that building until 1960 when attendance exceeded capacity. Again, plans began for a larger sanctuary and accompanying education and fellowship space. The present building was completed in 1966.
Our history is rich with stories of faith, perseverance, and community impact. We have been dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of our members and reaching out to the wider community with love and compassion.

OUR CORE VALUES
The Church of Christ believes in adherence to the New Testament teachings, emphasizing baptism for salvation, weekly communion, and a cappella worship.

Authority of the Bible: The Church of Christ holds that the Bible is the ultimate authority in all matters of faith and practice. They reject human-made creeds and doctrines, focusing solely on the teachings found in the New Testament.
Baptism: Baptism is viewed as an essential step for salvation. Members believe in baptism by immersion, which symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This practice is based on scriptures such as Acts 2:38, which emphasizes baptism for the remission of sins.
Weekly Communion: The Lord's Supper, or Communion, is observed every Sunday. This practice is a remembrance of Christ's sacrifice and is an integral part of their worship service.
Worship Practices: The Church of Christ practices a cappella singing during worship services, believing that this form of worship maintains the simplicity and purity of early Christian practices. They do not use musical instruments, as there is no explicit mention of their use in the New Testament.
Unity and Non-Denominationalism: The Church of Christ emphasizes unity among Christians and seeks to avoid divisions that arise from denominationalism. They strive to follow the patterns of the early church as described in the New Testament.
Community and Evangelism: Members are encouraged to engage in community service and evangelism, sharing their faith and serving others as a reflection of their beliefs.

OUR VISION
Matthew 5
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
